Photo Shows iPod Touch with Camera. Again

If you thought that things would be quiet in the world of Apple news until the yearly September iPod event, you’d be wrong. The rumors have already begun. Hardmac claims to have pictures of a next-gen iPod Touch with a rear-facing camera and flash. Rather than the usual blurry-cam picture we expect for leaks, it is a nice Apple Store-ready hero-shot. It is also, weirdly, in a case.

It’s almost certain that the new Touch will have a camera. We also know that the iPhone’s camera is pretty big, and would only just fit into the Touch, so seeing it all the way up at the corner of the Touch – its thinnest part – seems odd. So too, does the lack of a FaceTime-capable front-facing camera, but maybe that’s being saved for next-year’s model.

There’s not really much to get excited about here. The most interesting question, and the one that no spy-shot will answer, is whether or not the iPod Touch will use Apple’s A4 processor. I’d say it’s pretty likely: there are advantages of cost by using the same processor in all iDevices, as well as making things a lot easier for developers, who only have to write for one powerful processor, and two screen sizes (if the iPod Touch gets the Retina Display, that is).

One thing we do know, though, is that there will be new iPod models sometime in September, just like every year. Expect analysts to start “predicting” this fact very soon.

Rumor IPods Nano And Touch To Gain Cameras

Rumor IPods Nano And Touch To Gain Cameras

So says the Apple-centric Hardmac, citing informations from one of our sources. The scoop says that the next-gen iPhone will look exactly the same as the current one from the outside, and that both the iPod Touch and the iPod Nano will gain cameras. Well be kind and say that Hardmac has scored one out of three with its guesses. Sorry: informations.

The one feasible rumor here is that the Touch could get a camera. Its a real lack when it comes to running iPhone software Evernote, for example, is next to useless on the Touch and the general ease of taking grainy, noisy snaps with your phone of course disappears. The 2G Touch gained external volume switches and a (tinny) speaker. Why not a camera for the 3G?

The Nano with a camera idea strikes us as nonsensical, though. But them so did a Nano with video until it happened. It seems unlikely, though, that Apple would put a camera into an iPod that doesnt run the mobile OS X, and it would certainly mean a price hike, or at least a cut in profits, neither of which Apple likes.

Last, the non-updated iPhone hardware. This is clearly foolish. One of the main reasons to upgrade Apple hardware is that the new models always make the old ones look tired and clunky. This is why I have a Unibody MacBook when theres a perfectly good last-generation MacBook Pro on the shelf (its for sale, by the way). That Apple would bump the specs of a product and not make it look sleeker, thinner and generally more desirable is quite unthinkable.
