iPhone App Helps Drivers Avoid Speeding Tickets

Trapster
A new application enables iPhone owners to stick it to the man with the powers of social networking.

Trapster, a free app developed by a company that goes by the same name, follows a driver’s location as a dot on a map. If the driver passes by a police officer camping out with a radar gun, the driver can tap the iPhone to plot a speed-trap point. Trapster transfers that data point to a server, and then other drivers using Trapster will be alerted of that speed trap when they come across the same location.

It’s unclear how well this app will work, seeing as it relies on user-reported data. I’m slightly pessimistic that it would help much: When I see a cop on the street, the last thing I want to do is touch my phone, seeing as I could be pulled over because of the new hands-free handset law.

You can see a video demo of the product at Trapster’s web site.

Obama Invades the iPhone App Store

Obama_iphone
As if starting a Twitter account wasn’t enough, Senator Barack Obama has released an iPhone application to recruit supporters as part of his presidential campaign.

The application is actually much more sophisticated than it looks. The "Call Friends" feature doesn’t simply open your contact list; it "organizes and prioritizes your contacts by key battleground states, making it easy to reach out and make an impact quickly." On my iPhone, the app listed my Florida contacts on top and my New York contacts toward the bottom.

And to ensure you don’t keep bugging the same friends over and over, the app notates each person you’ve contacted with a "Called" tag.

The "Get Involved" button uses the iPhone’s GPS or triangulation feature to find the campaign office nearest to you. Other features include a campaign news feed as well as additional videos and photos — all about Obama.

The app is available for free through the App Store (although there is a Donate button if you wish to chip in to the campaign).
